Neighborhood information
San Giovanni defies the definition of “authentic Rome.” The neighborhood is replete with Renaissance buildings yet scarce in the city's renowned cobblestone streets and low-lit wine bars. You can walk to the Coliseum in 20 minutes, while it’s only 15 minutes to the area’s principal attraction: the Basilica de San Giovanni, which gives name to the district. It is the largest church in Rome and with the square in front of it, where there are often trade union rallies and pop concerts, the fulcrum of activity. It is also famous for the clothing market on Via Sannio where you can find good bargains if you have the patience. The district is busy, and the numerous roads that intersect here are full of traffic especially in the rush hours. However it is well connected with the rest of the city and San Giovanni has good restaurants and nightlife. Decidedly local in demeanor, San Giovanni's modern avenues open out onto unexpectedly ornate cathedrals, its food scene is centered on community produce markets rather than restaurants, and entertainment happens in parks rather than clubs. San Giovanni invites modern Romans to compare and contrast the pages of history with the amenities of the present day.
